The Seven Social Evils are:
Politics without principle,
Wealth without work.
Pleasure without conscience.
Knowledge without character.
Commerce and industry without morality.
Science without humanity.
Worship without sacrifice.

manipulations vs thinking clearly
demagogues and strongmen upended arrangements, institutions, and norms not by battering bodies but by manipulating minds. they exploited fear, hatred, and confusion just like the market exploits fear and greed. once those raw emotions are stirred, it will drive the market and people crazy.
the agents of mass manipulation are states, churches, and the capital. the hotbeds of manipulation are sex, race and politics, both personal and social.
unable to handle the uncertainties and the vicissitudes of life, human beings vacillate between unfounded hope and irrational fear. religious manipulators exploits this emotional tumult to their advantage.
we are finite creatures surrounded by the vast infinity, people, animals, plants, bugs, mountains, rivers, lands and stars.

What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. **But one glance at it and you are inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an auther is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.
one glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1000 years. To read is to voyage through time.
- Issac Asimov
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
